chord

Strike a chord in your circle.

Chord is chat with spaces, channels, and DMs. It runs on XMPP, so your account works with any server, and no company owns the network.

This is Chord.

Yes, it's a real app. Linux, Windows, macOS, and Android, in whichever of dark and light you'll argue about.

Chord on the desktop: the basement space with its channels, and a friend group talking about a new song in the music channel, with a link preview and a fire reaction
Chord's Home: direct messages and a group chat, with unread counts
DMs and group chatsHome is where the people are. Unread counts included, so you know who's been waiting.
A channel with the member list open, showing owners, admins, and who is online or offline
Who's hereThe member list tells you who runs the place, who's online, and who's pretending to be offline.

And in your pocket.

Same spaces, same channels, smaller screen. Swipe in from the left for the rail.

Chord on Android: the music channel with a reply, an unread divider, and a typing line
The channelReplies, a red line for what you missed, and a typing indicator to keep you in suspense.
Chord on Android: the space rail and channel list in the side drawer
The drawerAll your spaces, one swipe away. Yes, the rail is on the phone too.
Chord on Android: Home with direct messages, a group chat, and contacts
HomeYour DMs and group chats, and the little orange numbers that mean someone wants you.

The chat you know, on a network nobody owns.

One address, any server

Your address looks like an email address. Talk to people on any XMPP server, not only the one you signed up on.

Spaces, channels, and DMs

The layout you already use. Group channels into spaces, and keep DMs one click away.

Your server, or ours

Sign up on a public server, or run your own. Chord works the same on both.

Protocols, not platforms.

Chord speaks XMPP, an open standard from the IETF. Servers talk to each other directly, so no single company sits in the middle of your conversations.

  • Your account works in other XMPP apps too. Chord is one client of many.
  • Your spaces live on your server, not on ours.

Make it yours.

Chord Dark, Chord Light come built in, plus Catppuccin Mocha and Latte. Themes are written in CSS, so import one from a link or write your own. We won't stop you.

  • Imported themes can't load anything from outside the app.
  • A linked theme asks before it updates. No surprise makeovers.
